What is a B-complex?

The B-complex consists of the following vitamins:

  • B1 (thiamine): cell growth and development,
  • B2 (riboflavin): converting food into energy,
  • B3 (niacin): digestion and nervous system support,
  • B5 (pantothenic acid): involved in fat metabolism,
  • B6 (pyridoxine): affects brain function,
  • B7 (biotin): involved in metabolism,
  • B9 (folate): important for germ cell division,
  • B12 (cobalamin): red blood cell and DNA development – found only in animal sources.

Vitamin B deficiency

The most common manifestation of vitamin B deficiency is anaemia or anaemia. This is caused directly by low levels of B6 or B12. The latter is very common in people who do not eat animal products, so vegans should not forget to supplement with vitamin B12.

Vitamin B overdose

All B vitamins are water soluble and do not accumulate in the body. Overdose occurs very rarely, but an increased dose of B3 can cause peeling of the skin and excessive intake of B5 can cause stomach upset.
